I think ethical debates will eventually revolve around the creation of "artificial beings," that may be turned into high-level medical products to give human beings with serious illnesses, defects or imperfections, replacement or spare parts. The research and development of artificial intelligence will continue on its own path of providing a more dynamic research tool or knowledge library for all humans. There'll be another branch of research and development for "artificial beings," and this may become the more lucrative branch for corporations. You did a great job at distinguishing artificial intelligence as one form of science and technology, from the other that may prove to be more controversial and complex -- artificial beings. At least, that's what I got from your article. Thanks!

Actually, the screenplay's backbone was by Stanley Kubrick (unfinished because he died), and it wasn't as aggressively sentimental as Spielberg's version. Spielberg's aim was exactly that - emotional manipulation of the audience (his own blueprint as a director, while Kubrick is the opposite) by creating, in his own words, 'a fairytale for adults'. What it ended up becoming is a fairytale for adults who want to return to childhood and stay in it forever, which has been one of the main human 'yearnings'. The whole idea of paradise and heaven is based on this psychological quirk - a realm / state of being with no growth or evolution, just 'happiness' (who knows why), forever being 'children' of this deity or that (usually variants of the Abrahamic one). That's why David is like that. Spielberg even makes the alien beings at the end acknowledge David as a 'tribute' to the creativity of humans, as if he was a culmination and not an outdated relic. Then give him one day of 'heaven' with a genetically resurrected Monica (who has no memories of dying).

Your reinterpretation is more astute but to actually apply this (updating the Turing test), humans themselves would have to acknowledge the folly of the psychological quirk I mentioned, and that would take quite a while. Among non-secular quarters, Buddhists with their fluid conception of identity and acknowledgement of everything being in flux are the most equipped. Abrahamics were not ready. Still not. Maybe never.

Miss Sass, hope you can help us reach the issue on water here in Camiguin Island. If ngangawa na sila sa mahal “daw na tubig ng mga Villar” e pano nalang dito samin. The Governor with his Father, the congressman, signed a fishy franchise. P35 lang po per cubic ang Prime Water sa 40cm³ up is bayarin na yan sa 11-20cm³ yung 40+ dito sa Camiguin is P53 napo. Sobrang pasakit sa mamamayan, tapos yung source po namin is free galing sa various natural springs na sapilitan kinuha through Ordinance. Kung di kami mag ta-tap sa Camiguin Water wala din po kaming iinumin, Camiguin is an Island. 😢

Nice one Ms. Sass. I remember when we were in high school when our teacher would require us to watch a movie and write our view on it. I’m sure you had experienced it too, but for sure, you wrote so well

Basically, David in AI is not so much a fake consciousness, but a frozen one - the kind of consciousness favored by certain humans who are uncomfortable with change and flux (and true death, which is complete dissolution and not just the concept of physical disembodiment), but near-immortalized. Like puer aeternus / amarantos personified.
